The Janazah Timeline

A simple step-by-step guide to what happens when a loved one passes away.

1

Death

When death occurs, the family should contact local authorities if necessary and then immediately contact Janazah services.

  • Recite "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un"
  • Close the eyes of the deceased
  • Cover the body with a clean sheet
  • Contact us or your local masjid immediately
2

Ghusl (Washing)

The body must be washed as soon as possible. We arrange for the body to be transported to a facility where Ghusl can be performed.

  • Performed by same-gender Muslims (except spouses)
  • Modesty is maintained at all times
  • Family members may participate if they wish
3

Kafan (Shrouding)

After washing, the body is shrouded in clean white cloth (Kafan) according to the Sunnah.

  • Simple, clean white shrouds are used
  • Non-extravagant material
  • Respectful covering of the entire body
4

Janazah Prayer

The community gathers to perform the Salatul Janazah. It is a prayer standing up with 4 Takbeers.

1st Takbeer: Surah Al-Fatiha

"Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem. Alhamdulillahi Rabbil 'Alameen. Ar-Rahmanir-Raheem. Maliki Yawmid-Deen. Iyyaka Na'budu Wa Iyyaka Nasta'een. Ihdinas-Siral-Mustaqeem. Siratal-Lazeena An'amta 'Alayhim, Ghayril Maghdubi 'Alayhim Walad-Dalleen."

2nd Takbeer: Salawat (Durood-e-Ibrahim)

"Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammadin, kama sallayta 'ala Ibrahima wa 'ala ali Ibrahima, innaka Hamidum Majid. Allahumma barik 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammadin, kama barakta 'ala Ibrahima wa 'ala ali Ibrahima, innaka Hamidum Majid."

3rd Takbeer: Dua for the Deceased

"Allahummaghfir lihayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha'ibina, wa saghirina wa kabirina, wa zakarina wa unthana. Allahumma man ahyaytahu minna fa ahyihi 'alal-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fatawaffahu 'alal-Iman."

4th Takbeer: Salam

Silent prayer for the Ummah, followed by "Assalamu 'alaykum wa Rahmatullah" (turning head to the right, then left).

5

Burial (Tadfin)

The deceased is taken to the cemetery for burial. This should be done rapidly, ideally within 24 hours.

  • Body placed directly in soil or simple casket (per local law)
  • Face turned towards the Qibla
  • Attendees participate in filling the grave
